"For me, films are about ideas", said Norman Jewison (director of such films as "In the Heat of the Night", "Fiddler on the Rood" and "Moonstruck"), looking out over Central Park on a fine New York day not long ago. "Every director should ask himself, 'Why am I making this picture?' And if you can't answer that, you shouldn't make it."Why am I working this hard in a job I despise? Why am I tired all the time? Why do i watch so much TV? Why am I obsessed with a clean house? Why, why, why...
Madeleine L'Engle declared that "what if?" is the basis of all story. But I would add that "why?" must be "what if's" sibling, or at least first cousin. Too many times in business and in life I believe we avoid the big question of why?
That policy makes no sense...then why do we have it? NBA players should not make in a game what a teacher makes in a couple of years...so why do we allow it to happen?
Where do you need to ask why? What areas of your business and life need careful scrutiny and painfully honest evaluation? Don't make excuses...make the time to find the answers to the big question...why?
