Social Media?

I have been wondering out loud for months now whether or not many of the current social media pieces such as Facebook and Twitter have peaked or not. At the same time that we are graduating folks with degrees in Social Media Marketing I have begun noticing that many of the young adults I am close to have been using Facebook less and less. As they are the target market for Facebook I became intrigued and as the principle at a storytelling company I have been suggesting to our clients they should not get too fascinated by the medium.

So, about a week ago I read an article in Huffpost Tech that MILLIONS of Facebook users in Canada and the US had opted out in recent weeks. Click HERE to read the full article. Now, I realize that owing to the popularity in the past couple of years that Facebook has enjoyed they aren't about to up and blow away today or tomorrow. However, as folks have flocked to Facebook as their primary web tool and presence in the last six months it is eye opening.

As someone who works in this industry, I was reminded as I read that article that I should not become too enamored with any one storytelling medium, as what is hot today may not be around tomorrow. It also brings up a real question regarding what it means to be profitable in this new .com age, a topic I will explore in greater depth in my next post.
