"Craft forms known to us today would not exist if it were not for the artists. For thousands of years they have carried on traditions; some remain true to long established practice, while others add their own twist. In both instances artists understand their materials, are masters of their techniques, and have developed unique visions in order to make beautiful objects. But all artists take things a step farther when they are willing to teach others what they know. Teaching allows them to give back what was given to them when they were starting out. This, ultimately is what makes the world of craft unique." -- from Craft in AmericaGreat artists are not always great teachers. But one of the things that seems to separate artists from craftsmen is the desire of craftsmen pass on the trade or the form of their craft from generation to generation. This sustains not only the craft, but also the culture that supports the craft.
I hope that whatever your artistic medium, you are taking some time to pass along what you know. My children know more about all arts than I could have ever dreamed about when I was their age. Here is hoping that you are taking younger artists and creatives under your wing to share your craft as well as the culture that supports it!
